Children change what’s worth prioritising on this coast: long cliff walks and rope bridge queues matter less than beaches with easy access, somewhere to run around, and a backup plan for a wet afternoon. This route bases you in Portrush both nights, less driving with tired kids in the car.
Day 1: Portrush beaches and Curry’s Fun Park
East Strand, right in Portrush, is flat, sandy, and a short walk from the town centre, a good low-effort start. In the afternoon, Curry’s Fun Park (the fairground long known as Barry’s, reopened under new operators in 2022) has bingo, air hockey, and fairground rides under one roof, useful if the weather turns. Skip Waterworld on Harbour Road, it’s been closed since 2020 and is still derelict, not a current option however it looks on an old map or search result.
Day 2: Giant’s Causeway and Bushmills
The Giant’s Causeway genuinely works for children, the hexagonal stones are a real “wow” moment for most kids, and there’s a shuttle bus down to the stones for anyone who doesn’t want to manage the walk both ways. Keep the visit to an hour or two rather than the full clifftop walk with younger children. Old Bushmills Distillery itself is an adults-focused tour, but the village has a play area and the walk along the River Bush is an easy way to burn off energy afterward.
Day 3: Whiterocks Beach and a shorter walk
Whiterocks Beach, a short drive from Portrush, has more space and fewer crowds than East Strand in peak season, with caves and arches in the cliffs behind that older children particularly enjoy exploring at low tide. If everyone still has energy, Dunluce Castle is viewable well from its car park without committing to a full visit, useful if a full castle tour is more than younger children will tolerate.
What we’d skip with young children
Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is a genuinely memorable experience, but it involves a real queue, a walk to and from the car park, and a bridge crossing that isn’t for every child (or every parent). It’s a better fit for children old enough to handle the wait and the height comfortably, worth judging based on your own children rather than their age alone. The Gobbins cliff path is a serious guided walk with via ferrata sections, not suitable for young children at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Giant’s Causeway buggy-friendly? The paved path from the visitor centre partway down is manageable with a buggy; the final stretch onto the stones themselves is uneven and better carried or walked.
What’s a good rainy-day backup with kids? See our Rainy Day Causeway Coast Itinerary, Curry’s Fun Park and Old Bushmills Distillery’s visitor centre are both indoor options already on this route.
Is Portrush or Portstewart better for a family base? Portrush has more to do within walking distance (beaches, Curry’s Fun Park, restaurants); Portstewart is quieter, which suits some families better for a calmer evening after a full day out.
