Rainy Day on the Causeway Coast: What to Do When the Weather Turns

Fact-checked 25 August 2026

Northern Ireland’s weather doesn’t always cooperate, and this coast is exposed enough that a wet, windy day can genuinely rule out the cliff walks and rope bridges. Here’s what still works.

Old Bushmills Distillery

A tour of the Old Bushmills Distillery, the world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery, is entirely indoors and takes under an hour, one of the most reliable wet-weather options on this whole coast, and worth doing regardless of forecast.

Coleraine’s indoor leisure options

Coleraine, the main gateway town at the western end of this coast, has more indoor options than anywhere else on the route: the Jet Centre offers bowling, cinema screens, and the Alley Cats indoor climbing park, and the Riverside Theatre, one of Northern Ireland’s oldest professional theatres, runs a regular programme worth checking before you travel.

Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart

Set in a Victorian mansion built in 1855, the Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart, the first arts centre established in Northern Ireland, hosts concerts, art exhibitions, and arts and crafts courses, a good option if you’d rather spend a wet afternoon somewhere with actual content than just killing time.

Ballycastle Museum

A smaller stop, but genuine: Ballycastle Museum holds real local history exhibits, including material on the 1798 Rebellion, useful if you’re already based in Ballycastle for the day.

The Giant’s Causeway visitor centre

The Giant’s Causeway itself is an outdoor site and rain won’t stop you walking down to the stones if you’re properly dressed for it, but the visitor centre’s exhibition space, café and shop give you an indoor option either side of braving the weather outside, worth knowing rather than writing the whole visit off because of forecast alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Giant’s Causeway worth visiting in the rain? Many visitors say the columns look even more dramatic in moody weather, and it’s far quieter than a sunny peak-season day, bring proper waterproof footwear since the rocks get slippery.

What’s the best single rainy-day option if we only have time for one? Old Bushmills Distillery, it’s the most complete indoor experience on this list and works regardless of which town you’re based in.
