Scarva, a small village in County Down, is best known for its annual Sham Fight and for sitting directly on the historic Newry Canal.
The Sham Fight
Held every year on 13 July, this commemorative re-enactment is Scarva’s best-known event, drawing visitors well beyond its usual quiet village pace.
Scarva Park
A small park with a play area, football pitch, and pond (home to various waterfowl), with picnic tables and walking paths around the lake.
The Newry Canal
The Newry Canal, dating from the 18th century, was the first and is the largest canal in Northern Ireland, historically connecting the industrial town of Portadown to the port at Newry. No longer navigable, the towpath alongside it is now a popular walking and cycling route, largely car-free and paved, running past a derelict canal lock near Scarva. The Belfast-Newry railway line runs alongside part of the route.
Visiting
The Scarva Tea Room offers refreshments after a canal walk, with gluten-free options available.
