Downhill Beach: A Complete Guide

Fact-checked 21 August 2026

Downhill Beach sits at the western end of the Causeway Coast, directly beneath Mussenden Temple, and forms the start of a roughly 7-mile stretch of sand running through Benone Strand to Magilligan Point.

The Beach

A golden sandy beach backed by grassland and an extensive dune system, frequently recognised with Blue Flag award status. The Belfast-Derry railway line runs along the base of the cliffs here, passing through a tunnel - watching a train emerge is a genuine, popular sight for visitors, timed alongside views up to Mussenden Temple on the clifftop above.

The Umbra Nature Reserve

Between Downhill Beach and the Benone complex lies The Umbra, an Ulster Wildlife-managed nature reserve protecting an undisturbed dune system of dune grassland, wetter dune slacks, and hazel woodland - home to butterflies, moths, bees, rare orchids, and ground-nesting birds like skylarks. The minor Umbra Burn river flows through this stretch, separating Downhill Beach from Benone Strand.

Activities

Beach angling, horse riding, and surfing are all commonly practised here; Benone Strand, just along the coast, additionally supports jet skiing, kite surfing, and other watersports, with lifeguard cover during peak season.

Getting There

Accessible by car, including via the tunnel beneath the railway line, with parking near the beach.
