Targeted fix only, not a full rewrite. Museum history and full collections detail below aren’t independently re-verified this pass.
The Ulster Museum is a major museum in the Botanic Gardens of Belfast, near Queen’s University, with collections spanning art, archaeology, natural sciences, and world cultures.
Getting to the Ulster Museum
By car: reachable via the M1 or M2, with limited on-site parking accessible from the Stranmillis Embankment entrance. By public transport: Metro buses 8A, 8B, and 8C stop directly outside on Stranmillis Road, and Ulsterbus service 8 also connects. It’s roughly a 20-25 minute walk from the city centre.
Opening Times and Admission
Confirmed accurate: the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, closed Mondays except public holidays. General admission is free, though some temporary exhibitions may carry a separate charge.
The Museum’s Collections
Four main collection areas: Art and Sculpture (including works by Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, alongside local artists), Archaeology and History (from Bronze Age artefacts to objects from the Troubles), Natural Sciences (including a complete Irish Elk skeleton), and World Cultures.
The Game of Thrones Tapestry
The museum holds the Game of Thrones Tapestry, an 80-metre embroidered artwork depicting scenes from the HBO series. It is not currently on public display - as of late 2025 it was placed in climate-controlled storage after its fifth public run since 2017. Check the museum’s own site before planning a visit around seeing it, rather than assuming it’s on show.
Practical Details
The museum has a café (Pym Café, ground floor) and a gift shop, with wheelchair access, accessible parking, and audio guides available. Guided tours, workshops, and educational programs run for both individuals and groups.
